I stopped into the Woodland Dunes Photo Hub meeting the other day. The passionate photographers, from novice to experts, were gathering to discuss winter textures. A handful of interesting photographs were displayed on the large monitor in the West Foundation Room. I was immediately drawn to the picture displayed with this article. Debra Jones is the photographer. Gently reposed on the crystal snow, the desiccated, tan leaf with undulating edge and prominent veins made it a visual delight.
I spoke with Debra about her interest as she captured this photo. She described that as she encountered this leaf it was just another leaf on the ground as she gazed down on it from above. And then as often discussed in this photo hub group, what if I looked at it from a whole different angle. Bam, there it is. This alternative angle presented a level of interest and fun details not seen from above. It is a good reminder to me as I am out soaking in the natural world to think about it from many different angles. It is like walking on a trail in one direction, and then on your trip back the other way, you experience almost a whole new trail. Perspectives are so important.
I also like this picture because I imagine this is what a small critter like a mouse might experience as they make their way through the world. Maybe they would see a place of shelter, perhaps from the wind or more snow. Perhaps it is a temporary hiding place from the hawk flying above. In any event, I hope you take the opportunity to think and visualize from an atypical angle. It just might surprise and delight you.
If the Woodland Dunes Photo Hub sounds interesting to you, the next meeting is at the Nature Center on Wednesday, March 19 from 10 am until ~11:30 am. Photographers shoot with any type of camera- from your phone to your DSL. We would love to see you here.
